If you want more than just a hike and a challenge this might be the trip for you. We will be climbing ladders and scrambling over rocks, while enjoying the narrow slot canyons and sweeping vistas of the Mecca Hills area north of the Salton Sea.
On Saturday we will get an early start at the meeting location. The last portion of the drive will get us through the beautiful Painted Canyon. The dirt road is typically passable with patience and a standard car, but high clearance vehicles will have an advantage.
Once we set up camp in one of the washes, we will head out to explore one of the lesser-known ladder canyons of the area. Our hike will take us first through the main canyon, then over a mesa with sweeping views of the Salton Sea and the Badlands and finally through a narrow slot canyon. Along the way we will encounter multiple ladders of varying sizes to climb up and down.
Saturday night we will have a portable campfire and enjoy “bring your own” appetizers and dinner. We will also do a how-to-pack-your backpack demo and tent tour to familiarize yourself with gear options.
On Sunday we will start with breakfast. After breaking camp, we will explore the “classic” ladder canyon with more ladders, views, and beautiful rock formations before heading back home.
Special Outing Requirements: Although the overall pace will be moderate this trip requires good physical fitness, not just legs but also arm strength. It will involve rock scrambling, climbing tall ladders, and going through tight spaces. It is not for those with fear of heights or claustrophobia! Good grippy shoes are required, scrambling gloves recommended.
