Explore the biodiversity and climatic variety (prickers to pines) of Anza-Borrego in Little Blair Valley. The area itself is renowned for its dark skies, bright stars, and solitude. On Saturday we'll set out early for Whale Peak at 5,439 ft, climbing through desert chaparral up to pinyon pines. Be prepared for a full-body workout, as we'll gain half of our elevation off-trail scrambling up boulders and through vegetation in a dried-out drainage. After enjoying 360° views of the desert on Whale Peak, we'll descend and make our way to camp nearby. That evening we'll enjoy a contained campfire (conditions permitting) and discuss gear. Sunday morning we'll pack up after a tent tour and head over to nearby Ghost Mountain for a mix of on-trail and cross-country travel, taking time along the way to explore the enigmatic "Yaquitepec" (aka Marshal South homestead) and a Kumeyaay kitchen.
